Jane Austen's e-book Northanger Abbey is part of a series of Jane Austen's works.
Northanger Abbey is basically a parody of Gothic literature, which was extremely popular in the 1790s and around the turn of the century. By making her heroine a bland and unremarkable girl from a middle-class background, allowing the heroine to fall in love with the hero before he has a serious thought of her, and revealing the heroine's love for the hero before he has a serious thought of her, Austen upends the conventions of eighteenth-century novels.

Catherine, the novel's naive 17-year-old heroine, lacks life experience but is eager to find the best in others. "Pleasant, and when in good looks, beautiful," she says of her appearance. Her love of Gothic novels and a vivid imagination may lead her to misunderstand real events.
She has a sweet and good-natured disposition, is observant but naive, and does not see sinister underlying motives in people's acts until the novel's conclusion. Her love of ironic humour is shared by her and Henry Tilney. Following Catherine's introduction to the outside world in Bath, the novel follows her as she develops and matures into a deeper understanding of people's natures.
